FUNGI, MONERANS AND PROTISTAS
|
The FUNGUS (plural: fungi), the MONERA and the PROTISTA kingdoms are very different from us, that is why they are so interesting.
|
FUNGI
Most fungi are multicellular organisms (like mushrooms), but there are unicellular fungi as well (for example, yeast).
Most fungi are multicellular organisms (like mushrooms), but there are unicellular fungi as well (for example, yeast).
- Reproduction: fungi produce spores that are dispersed by the wind, water, animals,...
- Nutrition: fungi are decomposers, that means they break down dead organisms into nutrients that are released back in the soil. Then, plants will use those nutrients to produce their own food.
- Movement: fungi can't move.
MONERANS
Monerans are unicellular organisms. Bacterias are monerans.
Monerans are unicellular organisms. Bacterias are monerans.
- Reproduction: most monerans reproduce by dividing.
- Nutrition: there are two types of monerans according to what they eat: heterotrophs and autotrophs. Heterotrophs monerans are decomposers, so they break down dead organisms into nutrients; autotrophs monerans can make their own food (yes, like plants do!!).
- Movement: some monerans have a tail to move, and some other monerans don't move.
PROTISTA
Protistas can be unicellular (diatoms) or multicellular (brown algae). There is a wide variety of protistas, so they have many different characteristics.

- Reproduction: some protistas reproduce by spores; some protistas reproduce by dividing.
- Nutrition: protistas can be heterothrops or autotrophs.
- Movement: some protistas don't move and some protistas do: they can move using cilia or pseudopods (false feet).
Time for some videos.
The first video is about fungi. You are going to watch how do fungi grow in a forest.
