INVERTEBRATE ANIMALS
|
Invertebrate animals don't have a spinal column. Invertebrates are very common: around the 98% of the animal species in the world are invertebrates.
Basically, the main characteristics of invertebrates are: |
RESPIRATION
Some invertebrates can absorb oxygen using their lungs (spiders); others breathe through gills (octopuses); and some of them can breathe through their skin (worms).

BODY
Invertebrates don't have bones, so they move using only their muscles. Some of them can fly. Some invertebrates protect their bodies and some invertebrates don't do it:

- Some invertebrate animals have a hard shell to protect their bodies. Examples: snails and oysters.
- Some invertebrates have an exoskeleton to support and protect their bodies. Examples: scorpions and spiders.
- Some invertebrates don't have any kind of protection. Examples: worms and leeches.
REPRODUCTION
Many invertebrates are oviparous (for example, spiders), but some reproduce through buds: they grow a bud in their bodies; then the bud separates and transforms into a new organism. Jellyfish reproduce through buds. |

Let's watch a couple of videos about invetebrate animals.
On the first video you will review how some invertebrates reproduce through buds (budding).
